Wearing Invisalign clear aligners allows for a more subtle method of orthodontic treatment. Its benefits are many, and its ability to produce results much quicker than traditional metal braces make it one of the most popular solutions available for both teenagers and adults. But are you familiar with the Invisalign treatment process? Are you ready to take the next step toward a straighter smile? A local dentist is here to share the steps you’ll be required to take as you move toward improved oral health.

Schedule a Consultation

The process of getting Invisalign starts with a scheduled consultation. Meet with your dentist, they will evaluate your smile and determine if you are a qualified candidate for treatment. Because Invisalign is not meant for everyone, it’s essential that your dentist decide if the severity of your condition will produce the kind of results you desire. Some cases require regular metal braces, but fortunately, Invisalign is known to address issues of mild to moderate overcrowding, gapped teeth, and bite misalignment.

Undergo Digital Imaging

During your initial consultation, you’ll also undergo digital imaging. Using only the most advanced dental technology available, your dentist will capture photos of your teeth and bite. These will help to create a visual image for lab technicians to use when fabricating your Invisalign aligners. Using specified measurements and planning to map out the sequence of your smile, these digital images are vital to the success of your treatment.

Receive Your Invisalign Aligners

You will return to your dentist’s office to receive your Invisalign aligners. You’ll be fitted with the first set and receive detailed instructions regarding how often you will be expected to wear them. The rule of thumb to avoid possible delays is to wear your trays 20-22 hours each day, only removing them when eating, drinking, or cleaning them. After 1-2 weeks, depending on your case, you’ll be required to swap out your current trays for the next set in the series.

Maintain Follow-Up Appointments

Every few weeks, you’ll need to meet with your dentist for a follow-up appointment. Taking little time, they will only need to quickly review your progress to make sure everything is moving along swiftly. There are no wires to tighten, so if you have no questions, these appointments will take very little of your time.

Enter the Retention Phase

Once your teeth are in their proper (and final) position, you will move to the retention phase of treatment. This means you will be required to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new location. Without it, they can shift back to their original spot, undoing all your hard work. Your new retainer will need to be worn all the time at first; however, after several months, you may be able to shift to wearing it only at night.

The Invisalign process is not designed to throw a curveball in your day-to-day schedule. Instead, it allows for effective orthodontic treatment that is subtle and capable of treating your unique problem without the constant stares of others. Now that you know a bit more about treatment, you can feel more confident when preparing to start your journey with Invisalign.
